Hong Residence

Project Type

Residential

Location

New York, NY

Size

4,100 sq.ft. (Cellar, Basement, 001 thru 003)

This building was designed as a residence for a renowned installation artist commuting between South Korea and the United States. The owner planned to use the basement, first floor, cellar, and backyard as their personal living space, while the second and third floors were designated as rental apartments to generate income.

Previously owned by a church, the building had been used as sleeping quarters for nuns. Converting it into a 3-family residential building required a full gut renovation, including the installation of a new sprinkler system. To address the limited length of the existing structure, an approximately 900-square-foot rear extension was proposed to maximize the footprint while avoiding vertical expansion, which would have necessitated elevator installation.

Seo Architect managed the full scope of the project, from schematic design to construction administration, coordinating with structural and MEP engineering consultants. The project was successfully completed with the issuance of a new Certificate of Occupancy.
